SUMMARY:Online Education Dialogue 2024 “Empowering Higher Education with AI” -Session 4
DESCRIPTION:In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming various aspects of society\, it is crucial for higher education to stay at the forefront of these changes. In 2023\, the dialogue centered around the theme “Navigating the AI-Driven Digital Transformation of Higher Education\,” bringing together 33 speakers from 14 countries for a series of 9 global dialogues. Through the previous events\, we recognized the AI’s vast yet largely untapped potential in empowering and transforming higher education through improving personalized learning\, enabling efficient management\, enhancing research capabilities\, and facilitating international cooperation. Moreover\, AI can assist higher education institutions in fulfilling their social responsibilities and contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). \n\n\n\nOED 2024 will follow the footprints from previous themes in depth and continue diving into AI-Led Transformation in Higher Education. Our goal is to equip educators and administrators with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the digital transformation driven by AI\, ultimately benefiting learners and society as a whole. By exploring this theme\, we aim to contribute to a wider understanding and capacity building of how AI can be effectively integrated into higher education to enhance quality\, promote inclusiveness\, and create impact. The discussions will foster collaboration\, stimulate innovation\, and provide insights to reshape the future of higher education in an AI-driven era. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\nDialogue time: September 26\, 2024\, 8:00-9:00 PM (Beijing\, UTC+8) \n\n\n\nSession Overview \n\n\n\nAs AI reshapes modern educational paradigms\, young students and early-career professionals are both participants and architects of this transformation. This session brings together a diverse group of young leaders from different disciplines\, to explore how AI is transforming their fields and what the future might hold. With perspectives ranging from creative industries to legal frameworks\, this dialogue will highlight how AI is reshaping professional landscapes\, driving innovation\, and raising ethical questions. Currently\, Lucy serves as a senior management consultant at ZS Associates\, a prestigious consultancy specializing in the pharmaceutical industry. With a data sciences and biology background\, Lucy has led numerous high-impact projects\, providing strategic insights and innovative solutions to top pharmaceutical companies. Lucy possesses profound expertise in leveraging artificial intelligence to optimize drug development processes\, enhance patient outcomes\, and streamline operations. Additionally\, Lucy has a keen understanding of the types of talent that are highly valued in the pharmaceutical sector today\, particularly in the realm of AI. \n\n\n\nDr. Anna P. Lohse \n\n\n\nAnna P. Lohse is a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Chair of “Higher education in the context of digital change and diversity” at Technical University Berlin\, Germany. \n\n\n\nShe holds a PhD in Educational Governance from the Hertie School — the University of Governance in Berlin and an MA in International Education from New York University. Her dissertation\, „Higher Education in an Age of Disruption“ was recently published by Springer Palgrave Macmillan. \n\n\n\nNguyen Dang Dao \n\n\n\nNguyen Dang Dao is a Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University.  He is urbanist taking the lead in creating sustainable futures for Asian cities. Dao graduated with an award for academic excellence from Yenching Academy\, Peking University. After serving as the head of the ASEAN Delegation to the G20 Youth Summit and co-lead of the UNESCO Action Plan for Meaningful Youth Engagement\, he founded the Young Urbanists in Southeast Asia to foster a better future for ASEAN cities. Dao has working experience for the United Nations Human Settlement Program\, Vietnamese government\, Cornell University\, and Oxford University.  \n\n\n\nRodrigo Cardoso-González \n\n\n\nRodrigo Cardoso-González is a sociologist and PhD candidate in Political and Social Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). His research focuses on the relationship between ICTs and society\, particularly on how young people use technology and perceive digital risks in their daily lives. He has worked with Generative AI tools like ChatGPT Plus\, ResearchRabbit\, and ConnectedPapers for academic purposes\, including literature review\, working with multiple languages\, and designing AI assistants for specific tasks\, while reflecting on and declaring ethical AI practices. \n\n\n\nBrian Li \n\n\n\nSenior Manager for GMA Development\, Tsinghua University Online Education Center \n\n\n\nAssistant Secretary-General\, Global MOOC and Online Education Alliance.

His book\, Making of a Democratic Intellectual Tradition in India\, was published in 2019. He has authored over 41 articles in esteemed international and national journals including Scopus Indexed and UGC CARE listed journals. In 2025\, his co-authored book Federal Thought\, is set to be published as it is signed by Routledge. He edited Challenges to Democracy in South Asia (2021) and has co-edited three additional books. A regular contributor to major English dailies\, Dr. Karmakar has participated in international conferences in Germany\, Italy\, and Bangladesh. He is a life member of several academic associations and frequently appears in electronic media as a political analyst. \n\n\n\nJing QIAN\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\nHongyi Wen is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at NYU Shanghai. He received his BEng in Computer Science from Tsinghua University. He holds a PhD in Information Science from Cornell University. His research focuses on Recommender Systems\, HCI and personalization in real-world applications. His work has been recognized by WWW\, RecSys\, WSDM\, CHI\, etc. Prof. Wen’s current research interest is to develop human-centered AI for improving the long-term values of personalizations\, including applications such as AI for Education and Health. \n\n\n\nDhawal Shah  \n\n\n\nFounder and CEO of Class Centra  \n\n\n\nDhawal developed a passion for education while pursuing his Master’s in Computer Science at Georgia Tech. With the rise of free online courses from top universities\, he created a one-page website to curate these offerings. That site\, Class Central\, is now the leading destination for finding online courses and MOOCs\, as well as understanding trends in online education. Since 2011\, more than 80 million learners have used Class Central to decide which online courses to take. Dhawal has completed over a dozen MOOCs and has written 200 articles on online education\, read by millions of people every year. He joined Nanyang Technological University in 2011 as a Physics lecturer\, having previously taught at Hwa Chong Junior College from 1998 to 2003. Dr. Ho completed his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Toronto in 2009 and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Illinois and NUS. \n\n\n\nPassionate about education\, Dr. Ho has developed activities to enhance students’ thinking skills and bridge textbook knowledge with real-world applications. In 2014\, he helped establish the “Making and Tinkering” course\, where students are free to design and construct almost any technological prototype. The course has produced over 140 student projects. Dr. Ho has received numerous teaching awards\, including the Nanyang Education Award (Gold) in 2018. He became Principal Lecturer that same year and has held the title of Provost’s Chair in Physics since 2019. \n\n\n\nDavid Lazaro \n\n\n\nDavid is the Director of Edraak\, a Jordanian online learning platform featuring over 300 courses and over 9 million registered users in the Middle East & North Africa region. David has led design\, development and implementation of projects featuring online and hybrid learning for youth and government partners in the MENA region since 2011\, supporting national objectives in skills development\, youth empowerment and workforce mobilization of youth\, women and refugees. \n\n\n\nProf. Hew Timothy K. F.   \n\n\n\nProfessor Timothy HEW is a Full Professor of Education at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He initially trained as a Systems Engineer\, earning a bachelor’s degree in Computer Technology from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Before transitioning to the field of education\, he worked for four years at Sony Systems Design International (Singapore). Professor HEW furthered his education with a master’s degree in Instructional Design and Technology from Singapore\, followed by a PhD in Instructional Systems Technology from the USA. His research primarily focuses on optimizing student engagement in online activities\, with a special emphasis on self-regulation and the use of conversational agents. Throughout his career\, Professor HEW has received more than 50 types of recognitions and awards.
