On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, Universitas Terbuka (UT) and Tsinghua University co-hosted a collaborative workshop focused on the application and innovation of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in teaching. This event, part of the Indonesia-China Collaborative Digital Literacy Workshop, brought together academics and practitioners from both countries to explore the role of AI in education.

The workshop began with opening remarks from Dr. Rahmat Budiman, Vice Rector of UT, and Mr. Wang Shuaiguo, Director of the Online Education Center at Tsinghua University. They emphasized the importance of collaboration between Indonesia and China in advancing digital literacy.

Following the opening, there was a ceremony to launch the Global Hybrid Classroom program and the signing of a MOOC collaboration agreement between XuetangX and the Indonesian Cyber Education Institute (ICE Institute). Keynote speeches then highlighted the importance of digital literacy, featuring speakers from Thailand, Indonesia, and China.
Sun Hua, Director of the Center for Excellent Teaching and Learning at Peking University, shared his experience in building AI curricula. Qian Jing, Associate Professor at Department of Psychology and Cognitive Science, Tsinghua University, shared her experience in constructing AI courses.
Li Yifan, Senior Manager of the Online Education Center at Tsinghua University, and Zhang Dexia, Marketing Director at XuetangX, shared their insights on the teaching practices empowered by artificial intelligence in education.
The discussion on the innovative applications of generative AI in teaching was led by Dr. Nur Afny Catur Andryani from Binus University, Prof. Qian Jing from Tsinghua University, and Vladimir Starostenko from St. Petersburg University, who explored how AI can transform traditional teaching methods into more interactive experiences.
In the afternoon, the workshop focused on the challenges of higher education in the AI era, with presentations by Brian Li and Zhang Dexia from Tsinghua University and XuetangX, as well as Dr. Kartono from Universitas Terbuka. A demonstration of smart teaching tools like Rain Classroom showcased ways to enhance the quality and equity of education globally.
The event concluded with an industry perspective from Dr. Shang Gao of Amazon Web Services (AWS), a reflection session, and the awarding of certificates to participants. The workshop successfully facilitated cross-country discussions on technological innovation in education, strengthening the ties between Indonesia and China.
