The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM; in Spanish: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) was founded on September 21, 1551, under the name of the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico. It is the largest and most important university in Mexico and Latin America. Its primary purpose is to serve the country and humanity, by training professionals who are useful to society, organizing and conducting research, primarily focused on national conditions and problems, and spreading the benefits of culture as widely as possible. The university has more than 370 thousand students and 42 thousand professors, offering 3 high school programs, 38 career or technical terminal programs, 133 bachelor’s degrees, 42 specialization programs, and 42 master’s and doctoral programs.
