This Global Open Course (launched by Tsinghua University) will deal with China’s endeavor on poverty reduction by covering several topics, including the market-oriented reforms vital for poverty eradication, the historical phases of poverty reduction, the evolution of instrumental government policy reform, and the application of related governance models and cultural governance, as well as China’s social security system as institutional underpinning for poverty reduction.

“China’s Approach to Poverty Eradication” will be taught by Professor LI Daokui and Associate Professor YAN Fei from the School of Social Sciences, Professor ZHOU Qing’an from the School of Journalism and Communication, and Associate Professor ZHOU Shaojie and Associate Professor MENG Ke from the School of Public Policy and Management.

Course Timetable & Registration links:

Each session will be conducted in English and the first session will be held on Friday, October 29, 19:20 pm to 20:55 pm (GMT+8), while the remaining sessions will be held on every Thursday, 19:20 pm to 20:35 pm (GMT+8) from November 4 onwards. Students will be able to register for each individual session and are welcomed to participate during the live interactive section.

Professor Li Daokui. Director of the Academic Center for Chinese Economic Practice and Thinking, Tsinghua University

Lecturer:
David Daokui Li is the Director of the Academic Center for Chinese Economic Practice and Thinking, the Mansfield Freeman Professor of Economics, and the founding Dean of the Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University.
As a leading Chinese economist, Professor Li is active in policy advising and discussions. He is a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Committee (CPPCC). He is also a member of the Global Agenda Council of the World Economic Forum based in Switzerland. He previously served on China’s Monetary Policy Committee (from 2010-2012) and was an external advisor to the International Monetary Fund.
Professor Li holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Ph.D. degree in Economics from Tsinghua University and Harvard University, respectively.

Professor Zhou Qing’an. Associate Dean of School of Journalism and Communication, Tsinghua University

Lecturer:
Professor and Associate Dean of School of Journalism and Communication, Full-time Research Fellow of International Center for Communication and Director of Public Diplomacy Research Office, Tsinghua University. PhD from Tsinghua University in 2006. Focus on global public diplomacy, media and foreign policy analysis, China’s national image and international public opinion evaluation. Also an international commentary columnist for many domestic media.

Professor Yan Fei. Associate Professor in Sociology, Tsinghua University

Lecturer:
Associate Professor in Sociology at Tsinghua University, also affiliated with The Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center at Stanford University. Prof. Yan’s research focuses on political sociology, historical sociology, contentious politics, and Chinese societies. He received academic training from Stanford University and University of Oxford. From 2005 to 2008, he had been working in the Department of Applied Social Studies at City University of Hong Kong as a Research Associate.

Professor Meng Ke. Associate Professor, School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University

Lecturer:
Prof. Meng Ke is the Hua Yu Associate Professor of School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University. His research focuses on public policy, social protection and international relations. Named by the World Economic Forum as a Young Scientist 2020, he now serves as a fellow of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Frontier Risks.
