Beijing will host the 2022 Winter Olympics. This will be China’s second Olympic Games, following the 2008 Beijing Olympics. At present, China is advancing vigorous development of winter sports and preparing for the Olympics in an orderly manner.

This Global Open Course (launched by Tsinghua University) presents the origin and development of the Winter Olympics, the history and culture of China’s winter sports, and the development of China’s winter sports industry driven by the Winter Olympics in an all-round and multi-perspective manner through theories, case studies and Q&A sessions. The course will also specifically look into the preparations for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, and analyze the designs of venues and post-Olympic utilization, aesthetic visual elements in the games, innovative technology applications in winter sports and so on.

“Winter Olympics and Winter Sports” will be lectured on by a team of experts dedicated to the preparation and research into the Beijing Winter Olympics, including Professor ZHANG Li (Dean) and Associate Professor SHAO Lei (Vice Dean) from the School of Architecture, Professor WANG Jiadao from the School of Mechanical Engineering, Associate Professor WANG Xueli from the School of Economics and Management, and Assistant Professor HU Xiaoqian of the Division of Sports Science and Physical Education. YANG Yang, Tsinghua University’s outstanding alumna, chairman of the Athletes’ Commission of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Organizing Committee, and CUI Lequan, Director of the Research Department of the Sports Culture Development Center of the General Administration of Sport of China, will also be invited to teach. 

By studying this course, students can learn about the Olympics and its culture, understand the history and development of China’s winter sports and relevant industries, have a glance at the Beijing Winter Olympics in advance, and find out the designs of venues and innovative applications of technology. Students interested in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and the Winter Olympics at large are welcome to sign up for the course, as no background in relevant fields is required.

Each session will be conducted in English and the first session will be held at October 19, 19:20 pm to 20:35pm (GMT+8), while the remaining schedule is to be confirmed. Students will be able to register for each individual session and are welcomed to participate during the live interactive section.

Professor Zhang Li. Dean at School of Architecture, Tsinghua University

Lecturer:
Zhang Li (a.k.a. Li Brian Zhang / Brian Chang) [1970-] (D. Eng., M. Arch.) is the Dean of School of Architecture of Tsinghua University/ a Professor of Architecture. He leads the design practice Atelier TeamMinus in Beijing. He is currently a board member of the Architectural Society of China and the Editor-in-Chief of the leading Chinese magazine World Architecture.
Zhang is also the Director of technical planning of the Beijing Winter Olympics Bid Committee; Chief Design Officer of the Zhangjiakou cluster of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
His research areas are in Urban human factors engineering and contemporary architectural thoughts.

Assistant researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tsinghua University. His main research areas include fluid-solid interface drag reduction, self-assembly manufacturing, medical and industrial machinery crossover.

Professor Hu Xiaoqian. Assistant Professor of Division of Sports Science and Physical Education, Tsinghua University

Lecturer:
Hu Xiaoqian, Assistant Professor of Division of Sports Science and Physical Education, Tsinghua University. Professor Hu now focuses on sports policies, sports governance, and Olympic research.

Dr. Cui Lequan. Director of the Research Department of the Sports Culture Development Center of the General Administration of Sports of China (China Sports Museum)

Lecturer:
Cui Lequan, Director of the Research Department of the Sports Culture Development Center of the General Administration of Sports of China (China Sports Museum), researcher, and doctoral supervisor, focusing on sports history, Olympic sports, and traditional national sports. Cui has introduced archeology into sports history research for the first time, and put forward the academic concept of “sports archaeology”. Cui has made outstanding contributions to the empirical research of sports history, especially ancient sports history.

Professor Wang Xueli. Director of Center for Development of Sports Industry, Tsinghua University

Lecturer:
Wang Xueli, Tenured Associate Professor of School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University, and Director of Center for Development of Sports Industry, Tsinghua University. Sports industry development, organizational culture, organizational reform, strategic human resource management, with an in-depth understanding of and research on the theory and practice of China’s sports industry.

Professor Shao Lei. Executive Dean of Institute for Accessibility Development of Tsinghua University

Lecturer:
Shao Lei is the Secretary-General, Management Council, and Executive Dean of the Institute of Accessibility Development at Tsinghua University; and an Associate Professor of School of Architecture at Tsinghua University. Shao has a research focus on the User-Centered Trans-Discipline development model.
