Announcement of Winners for 2024 GMA Awards

In the wave of global transformation led by artificial intelligence, education has been undergoing a historic shift. To recognize outstanding courses in STEM education, particularly in the application of AI technology, the Global MOOC and Online Education Alliance launched the 2nd “GMA Awards” selection at the end of March 2024. Beyond its members, the Alliance also invited members of the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) to recommend quality courses. To emphasize the importance of educational innovation in the intelligence era, apart from the traditional GMA Awards, we introduced the “GMA Awards: AI Special Recognition” to acknowledge exceptional courses that successfully integrate AI technology into teaching practices.

By selecting and showcasing these high-quality course examples, the aim is to facilitate mutual learning and exchange among Alliance members, promote the professional growth of teachers, build an online learning community, and set benchmarks, provide models, and serve as a reference for the future development of digital education. These efforts are intended to inspire educators’ innovation and jointly propel education towards a new era of intelligence and personalization.

Through recommendations from the GMA and the AUA, a total of 35 quality courses from 22 educational institutions in 13 countries were submitted for selection. A total of 22 evaluators, including experts and students from 9 countries, participated in the scoring process. The scores of the 22 evaluators were calculated, excluding the scores of courses from their own institutions, and the remaining scores were averaged. In cases of tied scores, expert evaluators scores were prioritized. Ultimately, 19 courses were awarded, with 9 receiving the GMA Awards and 10 earning the GMA Awards: AI Special Recognition.

Winners were invited to attend the 2024 Global MOOC and Online Education Conference held in London, UK, on December 12 and 13. At the conference opening ceremony, Zhan Tao, Director of the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education, and Stephanie Marshall, Vice Principal (Education) at Queen Mary University of London, presented awards to 10 award-winning course instructors on site. During the GMA Awards Winners Showcase, some awardees were invited to speak, introducing the design and teaching experiences of their award-winning courses.

In 2025, the GMA Awards plans to further expand its scope, inviting more universities, courses, and experts both within and outside the Alliance to participate, deeply engaging in the development and promotion of high-quality digital courses. The Global MOOC and Online Education Alliance will continue to advance digital education, striving to provide effective support for personalized learning, lifelong learning, expanding access to quality educational resources, and educational modernization.
