This Tsinghua University course (graduate-level) is a part of the Global Hybrid Classroom (GHC) Certificate program.

This program focuses on the field of industrial and engineering management in China, helping students understand the development status, important innovations and practices of Industrial and Engineering Management in China, and understanding the characteristics of Chinese culture and society. The program provides a wide range of elective courses for students around the world. Through the study of this program, students can understand the latest developments in Chinese industry, Chinese engineering, Chinese culture and society, understand the management and service concepts, leadership and communication skills of Chinese enterprises, so as to cultivate students’ cross-cultural vision and Chinese perspective, build up the basic knowledge and skills necessary to manage international industrial projects, especially overseas Chinese industrial projects, and enhance their career competitiveness in the global context of the new era.

“China Engineering Management” certificate is compromised of 7 courses:

Students must complete four of the seven courses offered to earn the certificate.

China has been quickly transformed from an agriculture-based country to a new industrialized country in the past decades, and is still in the process of quick transformation from many aspects with unique features. This course aims at introducing China’s transformation from three major aspects: China’s current industry, Chinese society features, and Chinese traditional culture. The inter-aspect influence will also be discussed, which aims to promote deep thinking of China’s success in the past and outlook of future opportunities. The students are expected to understand China’s culture from historical perspective; to understand today’s Chinese society from political, economic, societal, and geographic aspects; to have some fundamental information about China’s industry from very primary sectors, to digital economy industry.

The course consists of learning in classroom and on-site visiting & investigation. Online students will have the opportunity to watch videos of some companies, projects, and historical sites. Pre-recorded MOOC lectures and real-time classroom lectures will be jointly used. Students who are not able to join real-time class may watch recorded videos and join online discussions and Q&As. Assignments include literature investigation and analysis reports, PPT presentations, and online discussions. Evaluation of study performance (marks) will be 100% based on assigned homework on selected topics.

Zhang Wei

Dr. Zhang is a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University. He is the Director of the Master of Engineering Management (MEM) Education Center at Tsinghua University, and Director of the International Master of Engineering Management (IMEM) program. He is president of the Chinese Ergonomics Society (CES) and Associate Editor of the journal “Ergonomics”. Zhang’s research fields include Human Factors and Ergonomics, Driving Safety, Innovation Management, and Engineering Management. He mainly teaches courses in Human Factors, New Product Development Technology and Management, Manufacturing Technology etc.

Marketing is an applied discipline based on economics, behavioral science, and modern management theory. It has the characteristics of comprehensiveness and practicality. The task of this course is to make students understand the basic knowledge, basic principles and basic methods of modern enterprise marketing; analyze the enterprise marketing environment, study the purchasing behavior of each market, formulate appropriate marketing mix decisions, organize and control basic procedures such as marketing activities and methods; learn about new developments in marketing. It aims to cultivate and improve students’ ability to correctly analyze and solve practical problems in marketing management; enrich the management knowledge structure of students with engineering background, such that the students can better solve the marketing problems encountered in engineering management practice after graduation.

Zhao Lei
associate professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University

Dr. Zhao is associate professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University. His research fields include stochastic optimization methodologies and their applications in supply chain risk management, logistics and transportation management (esp. urban delivery in megacities), and omni-channel retailing & logistics. He has served as the Secretary of INFORMS Transportation Science and Logistics (TSL) Branch and the associate editor of INFORMS Journal on Computing, and currently serves as the associate editor of the journal “Transportation Science”.

The course is designed to introduce students to human issues involved in engineering management. Topics include the nature of organization, organizational theory, participatory management, strategic planning of human resource, personnel selection, performance appraisal, working motives and incentives, power, credibility, research on leader traits, styles, and situations, and current models of leadership.

He is Outstanding Young Scholars of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and Former Director of the Institute of Human Factors and Ergonomics, Adjunct Professor of Georgia Institute of Technology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Yonsei University, and Visiting Professor of Chuo University and RWTH Aachen University of Technology, Visiting Scholar of Microsoft Research Asia. Dr. Rau is interested in Human Factors Engineering, Human Computer Interaction, User Insights and Experience Innovation, Cross-Cultural Research, Design for Well-being, Service Design and Evaluation.

Wu Changxu
professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University

Dr. Wu is professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University. He is former Chair of Human Performance Modeling Technical Group of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) (2014-2015).
Dr. Wu is interested in integrating cognitive science and engineering system design, especially modeling human cognition systems with its applications in system design, improving transportation safety, promoting human performance in user-centered human-machine interaction, and inventing innovative sustainable and smart energy systems with humans in the loop.

This course mainly teaches service strategy, service operation and related information technology. It aims to train students to adopt scientific management concepts and methods to solve the problems of strategic planning and operation management in the service industry. The course will integrate design thinking, new service design and development of innovative methods, as well as the theory and training of service operation management, supplemented by rich case studies of domestic and foreign service industries, with emphasis on service innovation

Li Lefei

Dr. Li is associate professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University. He successively served as the chairman and vice chairman of INCOSE (International Association for System Engineering) Beijing branch, editorial board member of “Journal of Automation”, and standing director of China Society of Logistics. Dr. Li is mainly engaged in teaching and scientific research in service operation and management, complex system modeling and simulation, logistics and medical and intelligent transportation systems.

China is in the process of transforming from a society dominated by agriculture to one by modern industries. However, this transformation process is not a simple replication of the industrialization process that revolutionized the western world in the first half of the twentieth century because the Chinese culture and the new technologies make this process distinct and bring many new challenges. This course teaches students the new trends and challenges in various industries that industrial engineering may make the highest impact and discuss the reach problems in these industries. Xie Xiaolei

The purpose of the course is to provide students with practical methods to guide the formation and execution of corporate strategies and business strategies.

How to attend our GHC courses?

  • Tsinghua University will send the list of GHC courses to overseas partner universities every semester. These universities will notify students to enroll and priority will be given to students eager to take part
  • Students from overseas partner universities have to complete the courses required by the GHC Certificate within a specified time. After completing each course, they will receive a GHC transcript issued by Tsinghua University.
  • Students from overseas partner universities attending Tsinghua’s postgraduate courses, whose own universities do not allow for credit transfer, can enjoy credit exemption if they study for postgraduate degrees at Tsinghua University in the future.

How to apply for the certificate upon completion of the required courses?
