Upon the successful hosting of Latin American and Caribbean ambassadors and representatives at Tsinghua University in 2021, the group gathers again in April 2022 to have a dialogue on “Digital China and Online Education Cooperation”.

The Latin American and Caribbean ambassadors and representatives from 21 countries gathered at Tsinghua University Art Museum on October 25, 2021, to attend a meeting entitled “2021 Prospering Together”. Learn more here.

At present, digital development has become the main contributor to economic growth and an area of great interest for China and Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries. The digital economy provides important technical support and development opportunities for online education, which has become particularly important, necessary, and urgent since the pandemic outbreak.

How can China promote the digital transformation of the economy? How will China promote international cooperation in the era of the digital economy? What is the current state of online education development in China and around the world? What are some of the learnings and good case practices we can capitalize on beyond the pandemic?

President, Tsinghua University

Wang Xiqin is currently the President of Tsinghua University. After his graduation with a Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electronic Engineering, Wang has served in different posts at Tsinghua University over the years, including as Chair of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Deputy Dean of the School of Information Science and Technology, Director of the Personnel Department and the Human Resources Development Office, Assistant to the President, Vice President, and Executive Vice President.

Uruguayan Ambassador to China

Fernando Lugris is an Uruguayan diplomat specialized in multilateral negotiations related to the environment, human rights, trade and regional integration, currently serving as the Ambassador of Uruguay to China and Mongolia. Lugris became the first Permanent Representative of Uruguay to UNEP and UN-Habitat and was the Chair of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) in charge of developing a legally binding global instrument on mercury known as the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

“Digital Economy: Global vs. Chinese Perspective”

Prof. Chen Yubo.
Senior Associate Dean, School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University

CHEN Yubo is Senior Associate Dean, Professor, and Director of Center for Internet Development and Governance at School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University. He received his Ph. D. in Marketing from the University of Florida, M. Eng. in Systems Engineering and B. Eng. in Industrial Management Engineering from Southeast University. Before joining Tsinghua SEM., he was a tenured professor at Eller College of Management, University of Arizona, USA. He is a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Prof. Chen’s main research areas include digital economy, digital transformation of Chinese economy, big data and business innovation in the networked world, and climate change and sustainability strategy.

“The Practice and Prospect of Online Education at Tsinghua University”

Dr. WANG Xiaoxiao.
Secretary-General, Global MOOC and Online Education Alliance

WANG Xiaoxiao is the Director of the Online Education Center at Tsinghua University, and Secretary-General of Global MOOC and Online Education Alliance. Since 2013, she has been working on MOOC development, blended learning, and hybrid learning at Tsinghua University. She obtained an Ed.D from Tsinghua University and a BSc in urban and regional planning and an MA in the economics and management of education from Peking University. She is in charge of Tsinghua University Online Education development, including online and blended curriculum development, research, and domestic and international cooperation in online edu

“Facilitating Global Sharing of Advanced Education Technologies & Quality Resources”

Wang Shuaiguo.
CEO, XuetangX

WANG Shuaiguo is the CEO of XuetangX, an online learning platform founded by Tsinghua University. Prior to joining XuetangX, He was responsible for the research of online education in Tsinghua. His MOOC was awarded the National MOOC of China, with over 80,000 enrollments. In 2015, he founded Rain Classroom, which is the most active teaching tools for higher education in China. Shuaiguo holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in Computer Science from Tsinghua University.

“Construction of Joint Courses Between Chinese and Latin American Professors: Exploring LAC and Understanding China”

Prof. Chen Taotao.
Director of Latin America Center, Tsinghua University

CHEN Taotao is a professor of the School of Economics & Management, Tsinghua University and the director of Latin America Center, Tsinghua University. Her main research areas are “Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)” “International Business” and “Globalization and Strategy”. She has published more than 30 papers on the topic of FDI spillover, Chinese Companies investing abroad, and has presided research projects supported by National Science Foundation, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Commerce etc. In recent years, Prof. Chen Taotao put more efforts on the topics such as The Business Environment in US & Latin America and The capability of Chinese Young MNCs etc. During the research process, Professor Chen has visited more than 50 branches of Chinese companies who have invested in US and Latin American countries, and collaborated with think tanks, multi-development banks, such as ECLAC, IDB, CAF, as well as top universities, such as MIT in US, Toronto University in Canada, Catholic University in Chile, etc. Besides, she has been invited to attend international forums, such as World Economic Forum, Emerging Market Forums, making speeches and being engaged into different kinds of debates.

YANG Bin is a Professor of Business Administration, Ph.D. in Management Science. His expertise in General Management includes Organizational Leadership, Ethics, Non-market Strategy, Higher Education Management and etc. He received his BS in Management Information Systems and MS/Ph.D in Management Science and Engineering from Tsinghua University with titles of “Outstanding Graduate”. He has been teaching at Tsinghua School of Economics and Management after graduation and won many awards such as the “Outstanding Young Faculty Award” and “Best Teaching Award”. He is Vice-Chairman of the Association of Chinese Graduate Education, Sectary-General of China National Engineering Education Supervisory Committee, and Sectary-General of China National MBA Education Supervisory Committee.
